We are looking for a family for Jayla a Hispanic/African American baby girl who was born on February 22. Jayla is an adorable baby who is alert and responsive. She makes good eye contact and smiles. Her birth mother, who is pursuing a nursing degree, stated that she drank alcohol three times during the pregnancy and did not use any other drugs. Jayla has been noted by her interim care mother and by the agency pediatrician to have been tremulous since birth. At 6 weeks she had a normal head sonogram. Tremors are a sign of heightened neuromuscular irritability and indicate that something is not typical in the central nervous system. In general, tremoring can be ascribed to some type of insult to the brain or to prenatal exposure to drugs or alcohol. Babies who tremor, but have no other neurological abnormalities, are at higher risk for learning, behavior or attention problems. If there is significant alcohol exposure, then there will be a higher risk for neurological impairment and more severe problems. It is imperative for prospective adoptive families to understand the possible ramifications for the future for any child who is tremulous or has been exposed to drugs or alcohol. We therefore request that families research these areas thoroughly. If your family could be Jayla’s family forever, and could quickly obtain an up-to-date home study, please complete the ASAP client pre-application form http://www.spence-chapin.org/asapreapp.html , note your interest in learning more about the baby and forward your home study if available to Fax number 212 360-0282, attention ASAP. We will contact you if your family is a potential match for Jayla.

Miranda, a lovely, engaging African American girl born February 19th, needs a family who can nurture and support her through any challenges she may face in the future. At her most recent medical examination on May 5th, she was very responsive and was developmentally on target. She weighed 13 pounds and was 24 inches long. Her interim care mom reported that Miranda is a sweet natured baby who loves to cuddle. Miranda has more than 6 café-au-lait spots on her body. Because of this, Neurofibromatosis cannot be ruled out. A definitive diagnosis may not be reached for several years. We request that potential families research this disorder before contacting Spence-Chapin. Although her neurological examination on May 5th was normal, Miranda does have a history of tremors and hypertonicity in her previous exams. Tremoring and hypertonicity are signs of heightened neuromuscular irritability and indicate that something was atypical in her nervous system. Although she no longer tremors nor is she hypertonic, she is still at risk for the learning, behavioral and/or attention issues that are associated with early atypical neurological findings. Whatever challenges she may face, Miranda is a delightful baby who will unquestionably thrive in a loving and medically experienced family. Homestudy ready families who are interested in adopting Miranda are asked to complete our ASAP Pre-application form (http://www.spence-chapin.org/asapreapp.html Home Studies can be faxed to 212-360-0282, attention ASAP.
