Hello my name is Debra Cronnelly and I am a 4 time special needs adoptive parent. I am trying to help the Spence-Chapin’s “A Special Adoption Program” (ASAP) find an adoptive placement for a baby that was diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome shortly after the birth. They are a wonderful caring agency that is one of the few agencies that have a department dedicated to placing domestic infants with special needs. Since Prader-Willi is such a challenging disorder they are having difficulty finding a placement that is knowledgeable about Prader-Willi. Thank you so much, Debra Cronnely –Truelymd@aol.com If you know of anyone who could provide a loving home for this sweet baby please visit their website at http://www.spence-chapin.org/adoption-programs/b2b_waiting_children.php?id=24

Sophia Sophia A Very Special Baby – Some New Information Sophia, a beautiful, engaging Chinese American baby girl, was born June 22, 2009. She weighed 5lbs. 11 oz and was 19 inches long at birth. Shortly following her birth she was diagnosed as having Prader-Willi syndrome. This disorder manifests itself by hypotonia in the early months of life leading to an inability to suck effectively. Sophia, therefore, is fed partly by bottle and partly by NG tube. The inability to suck will dissipate, at the very latest, by the time the baby is one year old. Later, other signs appear. Most prominent is a constant and overwhelming feeling of hunger leading to extraordinary efforts to seek and consume food. Helping a child cope with this insatiable hunger is profoundly challenging to families. It is imperative that families visit the Prader-Willi Association website which details more fully the manifestations and implications of this heart-breaking disorder. Sophia will have her first appointment with a Prader-Willi specialist in early November. Currently she is in good health and doing very well. Sophia’s birth parents are a married couple whose life circumstances render it impossible for them to parent Sophia. Although they will, in all probability, need to return to China, they wish an open adoption so that they can remain connected to Sophia and her adoptive family. Sophia is eligible for New York State adoption subsidy assistance. This automatically will provide her with a Medicaid card usable in every state. Additionally, she will receive a monthly cash entitlement payment (adoption subsidy) until she is 21. At a minimum, the monthly payment will be approximately $500 tax free. Both components of the adoption subsidy assistance are available to Sophia without regard to the income of her adoptive family, and will continue until she is an adult. We ask families interested in considering making Sophia part of their family to complete an ASAP client pre-application form and forward their current home study to the ASAP department. Home studies can be emailed to ASAP@spence-chapin.org , faxed to the ASAP department at (212) 360-0282 or mailed to ASAP at Spence-Chapin Services, 410 East 92nd Street, New York, N.Y. 10128.
